What is a banner ad?

An internet banner ad (also called a display ad) is a graphical advertisement shown on many websites. Businesses use banner ads to publicize new products, drive traffic to their websites, and increase sales.

On the technical side, an internet banner ad is basically a picture. An advertiser creates an image, usually in a GIF, JPEG, or PNG format, and then pays to have it displayed on a website.

Banner ads can be static or animated, and come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. More advanced display ads are created using Adobe Flash and can allow users to interact with them.

While there may be many types of banner ads, they all basically have the same goal: to put the advertiser’s message in front of a relevant audience. They’re hoping you’ll remember their name and click their ad to learn more.
